Path Dependence#
A friend recommended this article to me last week, and it's well-written: Have Our Media Usage Habits Been Formed a Long Time Ago?.
There are some examples of path dependence in life:
- QWERTY keyboard: It's not the most efficient, but it has been used up to now.
- High-speed train seat numbers are ABC-EF: D is missing because the path dependence AF represents the window seat.
- The duration of a song is usually within 5 minutes: because early vinyl records had a capacity limit that had to be controlled within 5 minutes.
As for the role of path dependence, the article says:
Past experiences, traditional habits, or collective memory can be understood as the "maintainer" of society, helping members of society generate a sense of belonging to the group, and it has an important function in establishing identity or social identity. From a temporal and spatial perspective, they provide social members with a holistic imagination and historical consciousness, and have the functions of sharing cultural significance and inheriting cultural traditions. This has gone beyond the scope of path dependence and is related to "how a society remembers itself".
This article also analyzes the reasons for the emergence of path dependence from the perspectives of individuals and society, and it is worth studying carefully. The future issues of the newsletter may delve further into the topic of "path dependence".
